The Problem
Water meters become outdated and need to be replaced every 15 to 20 years. Most of the meters in Detroit homes are that old or older.

The Plan
DWSD is installing a new, electronic meter reading system that will outfit every Detroit home with an automated water meter.

The Result
Your water bill will now be based on an accurate reading so every home owner or home renter will pay their fair share for water service.

Everyone must get a new meter equipment
Every bill, every month will be based on an actual meter reading, not an estimated amount. To accomplish this update, the installation of automated water meters is mandatory for all Detroit households.

Getting your new meter is easy
The Detroit Water AMR technicians will make appointments to install the new water meter during business hours, evenings and Saturdays. Getting your new meter will require an adult to be home for the installation.

Meter installation is fast
You won’t need to wait all day for your new meter. A technician will arrive within two hours of the scheduled appointment time. For example, if your appointment is at 2 PM, they will arrive between 2 PM and 4 PM. The installation should take no longer than 45 minutes.
The automated water meter in your basement will send your home’s water usage through a transmitter box, located on the outside of your home, to a neighborhood antenna. The information is then recorded and electronically sent to DWSD’s main database that keeps a record of each home’s water usage. No one will have to come read your meter.
